Course Description
While states and counties hold the "official" responsibility of improving public health in the United States government system, many aspects of our environment that can improve or harm community health are decided at the local city or town level, and outside of the public health department. General Plans or Comprehensive Plans offer a great opportunity to improve the health conditions of a community in a systematic way. This class will cover the process of incorporating public health goals into a General Plan or Comprehensive Plan for a region, county, city, town, or neighborhood. Participants will learn about initiating the planning process, creating and leveraging partnerships, managing public engagement and community assessment, and drafting policy content. Additionally, we will share examples of communities that have created "healthy community" chapters of their long range plans as well as projects that incorporated health throughout the planning document. Throughout the course, we will share real world examples the successes and challenges experienced by jurisdictions already on this path.
