Course Description

Cities are formed and reformed through various processes beyond the land use regulation typical of contemporary U.S. city planning. "The Elements of Citymaking: Design, Policy, and Finance" course examines design, policy, and finance as discrete but interrelated categories for a full understanding of the ‘citymaking’ process.

The course will examine the theory of citymaking at various scales, ranging from a development site at the smallest scale to urban regions at the largest. The course will illustrate these topics through best practices and case studies from North American cities, as well as projects from the instructor’s portfolio and at-home exercises.
