Course Description
As sea levels rise and other changing climatological patterns display an increasing ability to devastate urban populations, hazard mitigation has become a hot topic globally. Emergency management planners could reduce losses and strengthen community resilience by mapping socially vulnerable areas and focusing hazard mitigation efforts where they are most needed. This course focuses on techniques for assessing hazard exposure, physical vulnerability and social vulnerability, and understanding their relationship to one another. Through a literature review, as well as applied cases, specifically in Galveston, Texas after Hurricane Ike, Dr. Shannon Van Zandt goes through a step-by-step risk assessment model for planners to weave into their hazard and disaster planning strategies.
