Course Description
Healthy People 2020 highlights the importance of addressing the social determinants of health by including “Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all” as one of the four overarching goals for the decade. Community-based organizations (CBOs), especially those that serve in under-resourced neighborhoods, have a great impact in their community. CBOs continue to play a significant role in communities serving on the front lines to address the health, wellness, and economic needs of residents despite the economic impact of the pandemic. While it is well known that CBOs are stretched thin due to reduced staff capacity and funding, access to donations and strategic partners position CBOs as an integral part of protecting the public health of the nation.
Today, CBOs are returning to business as usual—launching local programs, old and new, boosting staff capacity, and learning new ways to serve communities given the lessons learned from COVID-19 pertaining to racism and exacerbated health disparities.
This course educates and informs on the ways that community organizations can enhance or expand their impact on their beloved neighborhoods through placemaking. Placemaking can be an effective tool for revitalizing neighborhoods and improving public spaces through community-led processes, thus promoting a sense of community pride and ownership. Community organizations are well positioned to lead placemaking processes in their own neighborhoods, and this course provides recommended strategies to support CBOs with planning and implementing placemaking projects in their neighborhoods.
