The final course in the "Form-Based Codes 101" series explores citywide form-based coding—the assessment of an entire city to determine where form-based code application should occur.

In This Course

  1. Dan Parolek introduces the final course in the "Form-Based Codes 101" series.
  2. Using a Context-Based Approach
This chapter explores the unique and shared characteristics of a community. A citywide form-based code utilizes an understanding of those characteristics to create a place-based organizing principle and code. A discovery process includes extensive photo documentation and mapping, ultimately leading to classifications of contexts throughout a city as walkable urban or drivable suburban.
  3. Citywide Updates
Peter Park discusses his takeaways from overseeing the zoning code rewrite in Denver, CO and Milwaukee, WI.
  4. Overall Considerations
Lisa Wise discusses targeted outcomes, organizing the code, combining form-based code and conventional elements, and administration.
  5. Hybrid Codes
This chapter gives an overview of two successful methods for integrating a form-based coding system into a citywide code update. Both approaches create model hybrid codes.
  6. Discussion
Lisa Wise and Mary Madden wrap up the course with a brief discussion.
