Course Description

Despite the spread of Vision Zero approaches and the stated aim of many jurisdictions to reduce road violence, fatalities caused by road transport systems are increasing in the USA. This course focuses on the intersection from the perspective of the safety of users outside the private car, particularly people walking and cycling. Students will review core concepts in the Dutch approach to the design of intersections, with particular attention to interventions that can be effective upstream of the junction. These fundamentals are then discussed in the North American context, where the history and challenges of implementing safe intersection design will be explained. Students will learn how to draw an intersection and justify their choice of signalized and unsignalized treatments for the intersection.
