Course Description

Imagine yourself as a pen, curving down the paper as if riding a slope. Experiencing, sensing and understanding the contextual cues that the natural and built environments offer are key to learning how to render them on paper. In this course, you will learn techniques for drawing, sketching and observation in the field. You will learn how to draw lines and contours, understand perspective, and render tone and value with light and shadow. The field sketch is the most fundamental component of being able to quickly capture and convey a visual idea based on actual or perceived phenomenon. In this first of a series of courses, learn or relearn how to experience the landscape, whether you are new to hand drawing or simply want to better understand how to observe the world around you.

Good basic course on field sketching covering value, scale and proportion, vanishing points, and mark making. A loose and fun course.

Wonderfully engaging. The cinematography, soundtrack, and narrative are exceptional. The early exercises help to take the pressure off of beginning drawers like me, allowing for play and freedom of expression. The shading exercise offers so much with great simplicity and economy. Really well done.

Great use of visual medium in demonstrations. I learned all this 20 years ago, but in watching and listening realized how much I've forgotten as well as how refreshing it is to have it all described again!

This is better suited to the great outdoors than to a computer screen, and some captioning would also be a good idea.
