What You Will Learn

Assess planning and policy challenges associated with AV deployment, including infrastructure readiness, equity and governance. Develop strategic approaches for integrating AVs — especially shared AVs — into suburban retrofitting and mobility hub design. Formulate planning considerations that ensure AV integration supports sustainable, inclusive and efficient cities.

Course Description

This session builds on foundational knowledge to explore how AV technology interacts with urban form, travel behavior and community design. Drawing on the instructor’s research, it examines how AV adoption relates to potential users, built environment characteristics and safety outcomes compared to ADAS. The session highlights opportunities to integrate AVs into suburban retrofitting and urban design strategies, including shared autonomous vehicle (SAV) models. It concludes with a framework for how planners can shape equitable, efficient and sustainable AV futures.
