Course Description
This Planetizen Courses panel discussion focuses on the potential for the COVID-19 pandemic to influence the development, demographic, and environmental trends of the future. The panel gathered remotely on a Zoom call in April 2020 from homes across the country to make sense of the many opinions and speculation about the future of density, housing, transportation, demographics, and more in a world forever defined by this historic crisis.
By identifying emerging facts amid an excess of speculation and also identifying the need for more and better data, the panel clarifies the complexities of a sweeping global crisis with numerous intersections to the field of planning.
At the time of filming, tragedy and risk still outweighed opportunity, but the panel expressed hope and recommendations for how some of the changes that have defined private and public life during the pandemic might have a positive influence on the social, economic, environmental, and public health outcomes of the future.
