Course Description

Yes In My Back Yard, most commonly referred to as YIMBY, is a grassroots social movement advocating for an increase in housing development at the regional, city, and neighborhood levels. Members of the YIMBY movement, or YIMBYs, are characterized by their support of responsible housing development, and by their close connection to Smart Growth urbanists and tenants' rights activists. "The YIMBY Movement: Opportunities and Challenges for Planners" course differentiates YIMBYs from their NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) counterparts while distinguishing between the types of development YIMBYs typically support or oppose. This course examines YIMBY organizational structures and the roots, goals, setbacks, successes, and tactics of the YIMBY movement. The course also shows how YIMBYs influence debates on urban planning and housing policy, and how the pro-housing agenda of YIMBYs might impact the work of urban planners. By the end of the course, viewers will gain an understanding of the underpinnings of the YIMBY movement as well as the events and policies responsible for housing shortages, using Los Angeles as a pertinent case study. Join course instructor Mark Vallianatos, a policy expert and self-professed YIMBY as well as director of LAplus and co-founder and policy director of Abundant Housing LA, in exploring and analyzing the development of an increasingly relevant movement in "The YIMBY Movement: Opportunities and Challenges for Planners."
