Neighborhoods are the building blocks of the urban pattern. A transect considers patterns of urban intensity, ranging from rural to urban. In the first part of this course, learn how to delineate a set of neighborhoods and propose a neighborhood framework—a set of neighborhoods determined by combining varying layers of information. The second part of this course explores transects and demonstrates how to construct a new kind of zoning code using blocks as the unit of analysis and assigning a transect zone to each block.

In This Course

  1. Emily Talen introduces the topics covered in the second course of the Urban Design for Planners series.
  2. A neighborhood is the basic special unit of an urban area, and establishing a neighborhood structure is critical in urban design. This chapter introduces the first task in this course—to propose a neighborhood framework. Each neighborhood within this overall framework will include a spatial delineation (i.e., size, shape) and a center.
  3. This chapter demonstrates how to create a layer of points and then add buffers, or pedestrian sheds, around them.
  4. QGIS: Opening Google Maps Layers
    Learn how to add Google satellite images and other open source layers to QGIS.
  5. QGIS: Combining Layers
    This chapter demonstrates how to construct layers of information for delineating neighborhood boundaries.
  6. QGIS: Final Representation
    This chapter shows an example representation of neighborhood delineation in its final form.
  7. What are Transects?
    A transect is an analytical method that organizes the elements of urbanism—e.g., building, lot, land use, street, and all of the other physical aspects of the human habitat—in ways that preserve the integrity of different types of urban and rural environments. In the next few chapters, lean how to design a new zoning map based on the idea of an urban-to-rural transect.
  8. QGIS: Blocks and Parcels Layers
    Learn how to designate blocks into categories of intensity.
  9. QGIS: Land Use Intensity
    In this chapter, learn how to assign each block a level of land-use intensity based on the make-up of the parcel-based land use for the block.
  10. QGIS: Creating Buffers using SelectPlus
    This chapter shows how to create a new layer by selecting blocks based on their location.
  11. QGIS: Building a Density Layer
    Densities are determined based on census data at the block-group level. The final chapter shows how blocks are put into one of five density categories based on the range of densities found in the example neighborhood of Bridgeport in Chicago.
