Course Description

This course discusses how to get youth involved in their communities through local arts and culture. Vulnerable neighborhoods often struggle with access to arts and culture opportunities, and arts and culture have various benefits for a community beyond economic impact.

This course highlights the challenges and opportunities for involving at-risk youth in the process of arts and culture curation, because at-risk youth are often victimized and policed by their own community–adults, seniors, and police. Engaging youth in the revitalization of their own communities can impact their sense of ownership and pride and thus inform the way they show up and operate in that space. Empowering the next generation with the tools to make change in their own neighborhood is critical to the future of a neighborhood, yet the youth are so often overlooked.

Youth voices are critical to transforming a neighborhood for the better, especially if a community has a high young adult population. Young people often feel like the spaces in their community is not for them, but neighborhood revitalization efforts that focus on their needs and activate their ideas for change can transform their sense of belonging.
