Course Description
This course, "Housing and Racial Justice: Current Events Urban Resilience," presents a TICCO Virtual Conference Event, hosted with support from Island Press in September 2020.
The panel presents a detailed discussion of the complex and challenging mix of forces contributing to historic levels of housing stress throughout the country, with the understanding that the housing affordability crisis looks very different if you live in Los Angeles or Baltimore or Atlanta. Over the course of the discussion, you'll discover how deep the roots of the housing affordability crisis reach. After multiple decades of discriminatory practices, from private and public forces, with some of the worst offenses directed toward Black communities, discrimination and inequality are still built into the fabric of communities.
Despite a growing awareness about the history and present of discrimination in the housing market, solutions to the housing affordability crisis are hard to come by—hard, but not impossible. As shown in this panel discussion, planners and advocates must evolve their understanding and their actions to overcome the housing affordability crisis, protect housing affordability as a human right, protect the communities caught up in the gentrification and displacement of urban neighborhoods, and prevent the worst outcomes for the most vulnerable community members.
